Sort through accumulated cans of paints and stains. Take the rejects to your local hazardous-waste site.

Get exterior painting and repair projects underway. Remember: Most projects take at least 50 percent longer than you figured so give yourself some leeway.

Examine all the lamps in your home. Check and repair wiggly bases and sockets, replace worn-out cords. Tighten up the porcelain collars of basement light fixtures. Replace broken pull chains.
